NHC Government Center

Located on a 15-acre site at 230 Government Center Drive in Wilmington, the Government Center redevelopment marks a major transformation in how New Hanover County serves its citizens and how it partners with the private sector to maximize value. After years of operating from a repurposed retail building that had grown inefficient and costly to maintain, the County embarked on a comprehensive redevelopment initiative in partnership with Cape Fear Development. In June 2020, the Board of Commissioners approved the development agreement, and construction of the new facility began in March 2021. The resulting modern facility opened for operations in the spring of 2023, under budget and on-time. The new Government Center is approximately 130,000 square feet, including 105,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet dedicated to the 911 Center and Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The redevelopment was structured as a public-private partnership where the County retained ownership of the land and building for the public portion, while Cape Fear Development acquired approximately half of the site for the construction of Proximity Government Center, the luxury residential and mixed use private component that is currently under construction.
